About the New York Geological Association
Offering Geology Education & Guidebooks

The New York State Geological Association was founded in May 1925 by a small group of geologists, most of whom were college or university faculty members who felt the need for a yearly get-together for the exchange of information on the geology of New York State. Since then, the association has held annual field meetings (except during the war years of 1942 to 1945) with a different educational institution or professional organization acting as the annual host.

Student Working

A Growing Organization

As it grew in size and importance through the years, it attracted an ever-increasing number of geology faculty and students, both undergraduate and graduate. Because undergraduates account for more than 50% of the annual meeting attendance the association remains distinctly "student-oriented" while maintaining its initial purpose of providing a clearinghouse for geologic information among geologists actively engaged in studies of New York State geology.

The election of a Permanent Secretary in 1953 was deemed necessary to facilitate proper continuity of the growing Association's affairs. Publication of field notes and maps in the form of field guidebooks available for purchase after the field meetings started in 1957. Contact us to learn more about New York geological association.
